These days, it’s a given that snowboards with rocker perform better in powder than traditional camber models. That wasn’t always the case. Pro snowboarder Travis Rice was one of the first riders to try out a board with rocker in Haines, Alaska. But Rice wasn’t as much of a pioneer as he thought. While Rice was waiting at the helipad in Alaska, he heard that legendary freeskier and BASE jumper Shane McConkey had experimented with rocker in powder years before. McConkey had gone so far as to use water skis on his descents in Alaska just so that he could get more float in the snow. McConkey’s life is documented in the new film McConkey, which comes out this fall.
