Part of Patagonia's mission statement involves using business to inspire solutions to the environmental crisis. So when they started making wetsuits, the company knew it would be tough to build them without rubber, which involves a toxic production process. But after four-and-a-half years of research and development, Patagonia is getting ready to release a wetsuit that is 60% Yulex biorubber. Yulex comes from the guayule plant and is a renewable resource. The company hopes that once surfers realize that the new Yulex suits perform as well as traditional wetsuits, they will demand the renewable option from all wetsuit manufacturers.
